IBM has submitted a patent application for a printer that prevents the copying or printing of copyright-infringing text or images.
According to a report by TorrentFreak, the printer stops the unauthorized printing of items such as copyrighted books.
The Copyright Infringement Prevention patent's goal is to "restrict the functionality of printers".
The technology works by parsing content for potential copyrighted material. If such material is found, it will not allow the printer to copy or print the job.
"The computer, in response to identifying any text, images, or formatting indicative of potential copyrighted material, identifies potential copyrighted material within the file," said the report.
The printer can also be used to scan through large amounts of text and conduct plagiarism checks.
IBM's patent is posted below.
