From Canon's G3000 printer to playing the Solo Test; here are the gadgets & apps to watch out for!

Ink tank system all-in-one printers are a great alternative to conventional cartridge type systems. Rather than replace an expensive cartridge print head (with a high cost, low yield and minuscule amount of ink), ink tank printers keep individual ink colours in large (typically 50 to 70 ml) tanks. Not only do they offer fantastic print quality but they do so at very low cost. We've seen Epson take an early lead with these printers but Canon has now come up with its own range of ink tank printers — the G3000 is their top-of-the-line offering.

In terms of size, the G3000 is no bigger than a typical all-in-one printer. Unlike Epson's ink tank system, which is fitted outside the printer's body, Canon four ink tanks are inside the main body. There are translucent windows in front for quick visual inspection of ink levels.

The space-saving design results in a printer that is not much larger than conventional cartridge type ones. On top, you'll see buttons for power, copy, stop and wi-fi placed neatly in a line next to the scanner lid.

To test quality, we tried the printer out with photo prints, black-and-white documents as well as bulk document printing. We were impressed with the speed and quality of the prints — prints had rich colours with excellent details. Scanning speeds were great too — the first scan takes about a minute and a half, but post that, each scan will be despatched in a mere 25-30 seconds. Maximum size is A4, while maximum scan resolution is 600 x 1,200 dpi.

A full set of ink bottles is included in the box and after that, each bottle costs Rs 499. Canon says that a full set of inks (4 bottles; Rs 2,000 in total) will give you about 6,000 pages. Wireless connectivity is another strong suit of the G3000. It can be set up to act as an access point for direct connection with phones and tablets for printing. Overall, the G3000 proves to be a great ink tank system printer. It is easy to setup, has integrated ink tanks and built-in wi-fi.

Solo Test Game for iOS Get it for: Free

You may have played Chinese Checkers before. Solo Test takes inspiration from that classic in the sense that you have to move pins on a board by jumping over other pins. Each time you jump over a pin, it disappears from the board. The objective of the game is to make all pins disappear. There's a lot of strategy involved so yes, this is a thinking game.

Only one undo move is available, so you'll typically find your board still has a few pins left when you run out of moves. The game won't shy away from insulting you either — leave too many pins on the board and you'll get tagged as idiot, ordinary or brainless! Score better, and you'll be called foxy or a genius. Only the classic board is available to play at first — you need to score at genius level to unlock the next, and score genius there as well.

You can unlock all boards via in-app purchase of Rs 120. The ga me is lightweight, starts up fast and there are no ad interruptions, banners or videos. Try it out if you want to exercise your brain cells.

Norton Security Deluxe
App for iOS, Windows, Mac, Android Get it for: Rs 1,399 (up to 5 devices)

We only realise the importance of data on computers and smartphones when we lose it to a computer crash, malware or virus. These aren't the only threats either: you have to protect yourself against identity theft, malicious apps and phishing too. This is where programs like Norton Security come in. The Deluxe version can be installed on up to five of your devices (Windows, Mac, Android or iOS). You have to create a free Norton account and use the same product key you get in the box on all the devices you want protected. Once installed, it updates, scans your device for any threats and removes them.

A common complaint with anti-virus software is that it slows down the system but we didn't see any of that here. You can configure the software to run scheduled scans apart from the live update. To make web browsing more secure, you can add the extension and there are also built-in tools to help you check how your network is being used. It works out to just `280 per device, per year, which is a steal considering all the protection you get.
