The company has released CAD files, which is essentially a complete package comprising the controller's mechanical CAD geometry, allowing you to customise and design the controller the way you want. Still, this move is something we aren't seeing from Sony or Microsoft and the firm should earn some brownie points with the gaming community for opening up the plans for the Steam controller.
The files are being made available under Creative Commons licensing and include the geometry of all externally visible parts. Valve does suggest getting in touch with them if you do want to sell something like this, however.
But it does seem that this release truly accommodates gamers and makers of all shapes and sizes. The company also posted some encouragement when it came to having users 3D print the parts needed for the controller. You may need to revise the geometry for your particular printer. For troubleshooting during design and assembly, they even invite you to contact their Hardware Feedback service.
In order to kickstart the creative tweaking, Valve has also released some of its own alternate designs for the Battery Door (one of which is pictured above), which allow you to carry your USB wireless receiver with you.
"The archive contains several eDrawings viewer files: from Creo Express and native Modelling, to neutral exchange and 3D print files - for compatibility with a wide variety of your design tools", explains Valve.
Allowing users to design their own Steam Controllers is a great initiative from Valve. It feels off in your hands, the triggers are finicky, and it looks like Darth Vader...or an owl.
