Rarely do the worlds of 3D printing and mobiles collide, but when they do, it's usually with a bang. The OLO Smartphone 3D Printer is the first gadget we've seen that actually merges the two technologies, and it has just hit Kickstarter seeking funding.
3D printing may seem a bit too futuristic for some folks, and it can be pretty difficult to master depending on your setup. FDM printers are especially popular at the moment, but DLP and other technologies are slowly starting to become more affordable. If you've been chomping at the bit to get your mitts on a cheap DLP 3D printer, today may be your lucky day. The OLO Smartphone 3D Printer is a DLP printer that will work with a smartphone, and it is extraordinarily cheap…
Most of the 3D printers people see build objects up layer by layer through extruding plastic or other materials onto a bed. The object is done once the extruder finishes that precious top layer, but with DLP printers like the OLO, things are a bit different. It uses a vat filled with resin instead of plastic, and the object "emerges" from a pool of liquid in a very cool manner. Instead of using an expensive laser-based setup, the OLO Smartphone 3D Printer will use something everyone reading this article already has.
The OLO Smartphone 3D Printer will work with almost any smartphone up to 5.8-inches and is beyond portable due to its size. That will limit what you can make to a degree, but due to the nature of 3D printing and software, you can scale down almost any model. As for the quality, it's said to offer up to 0.036mm in Z resolution and up to 0.042mm in X-Y. That's pretty damned impressive, and they have plans of future models including an OLO Tablet version, OLO HDM, and an OLO PRO model with Super AMOLED 6K.
The OLO Smartphone 3D Printer Kickstarter campaign is live and gaining steam by the hour, so the early bird packages are long gone. That said, there are many packages available at different price points and there will be plenty of resin colors available at launch. Needless to say, if you are interested in 3D printing, you'll want to hit up the link below and check out the OLO 3D printer.
