PLYMOUTH— An 18-hole course weaved around the 36,000 sq. ft. of the Plymouth Public Library, bringing friends and family together for a memorable weekend one hole at a time.
Kids, parents, grandparents and even teenagers gave it their best go on the indoor green.
The course was open on Saturday from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. and again on Sunday from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. The library says they saw about 160 people between both days.
"We're only four holes in, but I'm having a lot of fun and I think I'm winning right now too, so we'll see how it plays out," says mini golfer, Curtis Smith.
Tickets were five dollars a person and if you didn't pick up a club, you could hang out in the clubhouse where there were games, food, drinks and face painting for the whole family to enjoy.
The money to build the courses came directly from Friends of the Library (FOL), a non-profit organization that helps to fill the funding gap for public libraries.
Paula McAdams is President of Friends of the Plymouth Public Library and she says the goal is to raise $6,000 for a 3D printer that would be available for the entire community to use.
"Maybe they only want to use it once or twice, so for this once or twice use, they can come in and use what we have in the library," she says.
The course was built from top to bottom entirely by FOL and library staff. The project took months to put together and somewhere between 60-100 hours of labor.
"The overall comment that I kept hearing from adults was this was way beyond anything they had expected." says event organizer, Robert Beck.
FOL liked the idea of the mini-golf fundraiser, but they were not excited by the thought of spend $3,000 to rent mini-golf holes. They decided to make it a DIY project and cut cost by a third.
The course was built to be able to be taken down and re-used for mini-golf fundraisers in the future.
Organizers say they are planning an adult's-only tournament for their next event to raise more money for the 3D printer.
